Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

During your First Visit

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is the use of internal and external techniques to assess and treat the dysfunction in the supportive structures in the pelvis.

Research shows that pelvic floor physiotherapy is the leading line of defence against incontinence and pelvic pain. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 9 men experience some kind of pelvic floor dysfunction.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help address the following conditions and concerns:

Urinary incontinence (leakage) – Urinary urgency – Chronic pelvic pain – Tailbone pain – Pelvic organ prolapse – Painful intercourse – Chronic low back pain – Pelvic health in pregnancy and postpartum recovery

These conditions can be treated and your pelvic floor physiotherapist can work with you to achieve your goals and enhance your quality of life.

What to Expect During your First Visit

During your initial pelvic health visit, your physiotherapist will take a detailed history and perform an external exam. They will ask for your consent and permission to perform an internal examination of the pelvic floor musculature, which is typically done vaginally.
